Children have also enjoyed learning from Flap Books. These simple rhyming books, with flaps to lift on each page, are loads of fun. Plus, as mentioned previously, the children enjoy finding the duck on each page of the book.

Usborne Collection of Picture books are colorful yet filled with uncomplicated pictures. They contain simple text, which is perfect for teaching kids. However, it is recommended that you start with the nonfiction series and work your way up towards fiction.

Teaching Language Development

First word books and flash cards, in the past, have been very useful with teaching children with autism the necessary language skills. This simple text is perfect for pointing and teaching your children new words.

Usborne Books Look and Say Board Books have simple pictures with words written underneath. On the opposite page, you will find a scene where the objects can be found.

Usborne Books First 100 Words Sticker Book teaches autistic kids words that they will use every day. Judging on the feedback, the sticker books have been a huge hit with Autistic children.

Your Baby Can Read DVD series allows the child to see and hear written words. These videos allow the child to memorize the written language while reinforcing the spoken language.

Another series that teaches kids about social skills are Usborne Look and Say Board Books. The autistic children see items and scenes associated with everyday events and places. They will learn to relate those events to everyday life situations.

Books for improving Visual Discrimination

Depending on the age and level of your autistic child, Usborne offers several series of books to teach visual discrimination to children.

The series Find the Duck (and other animals in their series) is a simple “look and find” book. Though children love to find the duck, the bear and the teddy!

The Look and Say stories are a bit more challenging than the Find the Duck collection. These books offer several objects that the children need to look for and find in its natural environment.

For a child that is at an advanced level, I would recommend the 1001 Things to Spot series, a collection that many autistic children would love. This simple text is a great first read, while focusing on finding the objects in the picture.

The hardest of the books that offers visual discrimination for Autistic Children are The Great Searches Books. They offer the most complex pictures. This might be overwhelming for some children, but perfect for others at a more advanced level.

Assisting in the Visual Perception Skills

The Usborne Jigsaw books are perfect for teaching visual perception skills to autistic children. They start out with 2 or 4 pieces then go up to 50 pieces. All of the puzzles have a full picture under the puzzle, which makes it easier for autistic children to complete.

Improving Fine Motor Skills

Several of the Usborne Books are excellent for teaching fine motor skills to autistic children. The series include: Lift the Flap Books, See Inside Books, Sticker Books, Slot Books and the I Can Draw books.

The See Inside Books are perfect for older children, since they offer more text for the children but still flaps to lift.

The autistic children love Usborne Sticker books. The children have to use their pincher grasp and pressure control to move and place the stickers on the page.

Usborne Slot Books require the children to move the mouse through the house story up and down and left and right. This darling book A Mouse About the House and A Squirrels Tale are both a lot of fun!

Autistic kids work on fine motor skills with the I Can Draw series. The children use their pincher fingers and grasp. This helps the strength in the child’s hands.

Teaching Higher Level Learning

Autistic children love the Learning Palette! Your children answer each question on the learning palette cards and match it with the correct colored disk to answer the questions.

This self correcting, learning tool shows the Autistic child the correct answer. It is simple and easy to use. You can answer all the questions or just a few.

Since autistic children often have a strong area of interest. Parents should use that to make learning more exciting for the autistic children. Usborne Books carries a wide range of books with various topics.
