Childrens Summer Reading
Let's implement a home-based childrens summer reading program. It’s important to encourage kids to read over the summer. We work hard all through the school year to teach them to read, so it’s vital to help them retain their new knowledge through the summer, even while they’re having outdoor fun with their friends.

Childrens Summer Reading Activities
Here are a few ideas of great ways to make reading fun over the summer:
|
- Story and Art
Begin by reading a story to your children. Then, make an art project to go with the story. My daughters and I drew pictures that were similar to the pictures that the artist created for his story. It was so much fun!
- Diorama
To make your story come to life make a diorama. I haven’t made one of them since I was a kid. You take a box, open at one end, set it on its side, and recreate a scene from the story inside the box. You will have so much fun!
- Story with field trip
You may want to do an outing that relates to your story! For example, read a bunch of books about going to the zoo. Then, visit your local zoo with your kids. Your children will look forward to learning more about the animals.
- Start a book Club
This will be a great time for children to see their friends and talk about their favorite books. Just pick a book for the kids to read that week.
Meet as a group once a week at one of the children’s homes to discuss the book. Depending on the ages of the children, a parent or several parents might be needed to help lead the discussion. You may have specific questions to discuss about each of the children’s books.
Be sure to keep the book club questions and discussion age appropriate for the kids.
Childrens Summer Reading Field Trips
Here are several places you could take your children to on field trips that you might all enjoy this summer: a planetarium, an aquarium, a beach, a local swimming pool, a science museum, a museum of history, an arboretum, a manufacturing plant that makes things your kids like (some of them have tours), an art museum, a play, sporting events or historic places of interest.
Childrens Summer Reading Reward
Okay, we all like rewards and recognition. So, be sure to recognize your childrens hard work reading. You may want to have your children keep a list of books they have read. Then, depending on the age of the children and how many books they read, offer them a reward. This might be a great time for a field trip or a trip out for ice cream.
Childrens Summer Reading
Your children will be very well rounded by exposing them to so many books and field trips. Not only will they become awesome readers but they’ll have fun working with you on fun activities, giving all of you memories that you’ll cherish for years to come.
