Teaching Gifted Children

Here we would like to share with you several ways for teaching gifted children. As a parent or teacher, it is important to help our children grow and develop.

Here is a list of ways for teaching gifted children:

1. Focus on your children’s strengths

We must see our gifted children’s strengths and build upon, just as we would for ourselves. For example, if your children’s greatest strength is reading, let’s use all our recourse possible to have your child learn and grow through reading. We can even incorporate math story problems into the reading.

2. Teaching Gifted children about topics of interest:

For example, if your children love dogs, find all the information possible about dogs. Your gifted children will love to read fiction and non fictions books about dogs. To switch things around, Blooming-Babies.com even sells a dog placemat! Or a dog floor puzzle! Eventually, they will love to write a story about dogs.

3. Teaching Gifted Children: Introduce new concepts and interests

If your gifted children focus on one topic, you may want to try to expand their horizons a bit, perhaps by teaching them about related or other ideas. For example, a trip to a museum may spark deeper thoughts, while learning new concepts.

4. Offer a variety of resources at home for your gifted children.

Children love to learn through playing or learning. I often see it as if my children were to have a job. Your gifted children’s job might be to play with Lego’s, do a science experiment, read a book, color a picture, or write a story.

In order for our children to do their jobs, we must provide them with the proper materials and resources needed to keep them busy. For example, your children may need Lego’s, crayons, and paper.

In order to make this easy, for you and your gifted children, keep it organized. I would even make a list of things: Lego’s, writing books, attending to the computer. Then have stations in your house, so if your children need something to do, then you can ask them what job they want to do. Then, they can easily do the job! This will help prevent your gift children from becoming bored! And we all know how dangerous that could be!

5. Don’t forget to challenge your children.

One problem that gifted children have is that they often get bored. Learning is not fun for them because it is often too easy. Therefore, you will want to make sure that there are special resources and advanced classes available through your gifted children’s school. For example, if your child is an excellent reader, you may want to see if your children could be pulled out of kindergarten for a first grade reading program. It never hurts to follow up with anything.

6. Reward your children:

Gifted children deserve a reward for their great behavior(s)! They need to be praised as much as anyone. Do not take their accomplishments for granted, as they have struggles and feelings just like everyone else.
